Guy, Kate

Senior Research Fellow, Centre for Climate and Security, Washington, D.C.

Kate Guy is a Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Climate and Security, where she also serves as Deputy Director of the International Military Council on Climate and Security (IMCCS). She is currently pursuing a DPhil in International Relations at the University of Oxford, where she studies the intersection of climate change and great power conflict. At Oxford, Kate is a lecturer in International Relations at University College, and has taught with the Blavatnik School of Government and led courses in the University-wide Oxford School of Climate Change.  

Most recently, Kate worked in U.S. politics and international environmental policy, with the Truman National Security Project, Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, the U.S. Department of State, the White House Council on Environmental Quality, and various think tanks and non-profits. She earned both her Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees from Columbia University and was raised in Minnesota.

    How can the defence sector best contribute to reducing global greenhouse gas emissions? How do industry and military come together to reduce the carbon footprint of major deployment operations? How should Western countries better incentivize larger emerging countries to be more accepting of more green-oriented military policies? Should the armed forces assess the training of future soldiers to integrate more civilian applications to better respond to climate disasters?
