GLOBSEC Young Leaders Forum allows young professionals to take advantage of the parallel GLOBSEC Bratislava Forum. The interconnection between both events gives them an opportunity to participate in different sessions and conduct discussions with high-profile politicians, decision-makers, opinion-builders, prominent analysts and think-tankers.

Over the course of its 6 editions, GYLF has welcomed over 230 participants from over 40 countries and from 145 leading institutions in the realm of politics, business and the non-governmental sector.

We are excited to announce that after a years’ break caused by the Covid19 pandemic, GLOBSEC Young Leaders Forum will once again take place during the 16th edition of the GLOBSEC Bratislava Forum (15 – 17 June). Since we would like to give an opportunity to attend the Forum to participants selected during last year’s open call, there will be no open call this year.

looking back

A key part of the GLOBSEC success story is the fact that it grew out of a student project to become a major international forum. Youth engagement has always been an integral part of our work. In 2013, the first GLOBSEC Young Leaders Forum (GYLF) took place on the sidelines of the annual GLOBSEC Bratislava Forum. It provided young professionals with an opportunity to discuss current challenges in international affairs, improve policymaking skills and network with distinguished leaders and experts. The only well-established forum of its kind in Central Europe, GYLF has since grown to become one of the most prestigious meetings of young professionals and decision-makers in the world.

expert insights

At GLOBSEC Young Leaders Forum 2019 participants held discussions with Thomas Greminger about diplomacy in the new age and talked to Timothy Garton Ash about the future of world order. They also created a response to the NATO Annual Report, talked to Admiral Manfred Nielson about the Future of War, and had a thought-provoking discussion with Alexandra Martin and Meredith Stricker on Women Navigation Through Disruption. The Tatra Summit Young Professionals 2019 cohort, aside from debating with leading figures of the public and private sector including Timothy Murphy from Mastercard and also formed their own analysis of Ursula von der Leyen’s manifesto: ‘A Union that Strives for More‘.

It was inspiring to begin my day at #GLOBSEC2019 by an open disscussion with #YoungLeaders on how we can reinvigorate #multilateralism, #diplomacy and a constructive dialogue on #security challenges. Great to see #Youth is so dedicated & engaged! [tweet]

  • GYLF Chat: Global Post-Pandemic Leadership

The Covid-19 pandemic is not yet over, but some of the lessons can already be drawn. What has the pandemic taught us about global cooperation? What new types of partnerships and models of leadership are potentially on the horizon, and how will they re-shape the current setup? Are there ‘winners‘ and ‘losers‘ of the pandemic and if so, who are they?

China’s role on the global stage remains something of an enigma, but one thing is for certain – its efforts to gain influence in various regions has been re-shaping local as well as European politics. How important is China’s leverage in CEE to its global interest? Is China’s influence in the region still on the rise or is China losing its charm? • GYLF Discussion: Future of US – Russia Relations Under the Biden Administration: (Un)Stable and (Un)Predictable?

Unlike his predecessors, President Biden has made it quite clear that the US is not seeking to 'reset' relations with Putin’s Russia – but what foreign policy implications exactly is that likely to have? Could the stable and predictable relations that the current US administration desires really be on the cards following the summit between the two leaders in Geneva? What are the implications of a possible further deterioration in relations, not just for the transatlantic Alliance, but also for CEE?

The Covid19 pandemic has fully exposed the EU’s undisputable strengths, as well as long-standing weaknesses. What role will the EU play in the lives of its citizens after the pandemic? Can the EU answer for itself what kind of leadership position it could and should take on the global stage? What impact will the EU’s internal divisions, lessened as well as exacerbated by the pandemic, have on both?

  • GYLF Chat: NATO 2030: Making a Strong Alliance Stronger?

This week’s NATO summit in Brussels has been described as a ‘pivotal’ moment, set to open a new chapter following the Trump era characterised by doubt about the strength and purpose of the transatlantic relations and alliance. How willing are the Allies to come together to face tomorrow’s challenges, as outlined by the NATO 2030 initiative? How capable is NATO of integrating the latest technological innovations to remain the strongest military alliance? How will challenges such as China’s military rise of the impact of climate change on security affect NATO and its partners in the upcoming decade?

  • GYLF Chat: The Many Shades of the Israeli – Palestine Conflict

The latest confrontation between Israel and Palestine brought renewed international attention to the many complexities of the situation in the region. What role do the young leaders on both sides of the conflict play in bringing about non-violent solutions, internationally and domestically? Can Palestinian youth bring about lasting reforms and thus change the direction of their country? And what consequences might that have on the region and on the global policymaking?

  • GYLF Chat: Transatlantic Digital Agenda: Facing the Future Together?

After a year-long process of laying down ground rules for regulating digital technology and power on the part of the EU, the response of the US especially to some of the tougher measures against US digital firms is eagerly anticipated. Can agreement on both sides of the Atlantic be reached on matters of competition policy, digital tax, content moderation or privacy, or will the differing ambitions lead to more competition and less cooperation? What are the risks of the continuation of disparate approach, especially vis-a-vis China’s rise to the position of a rule-maker in the digital world?

  • GYLF Chat: The Heat is On: Security Implications of Climate Change

Beyond the coronavirus looms the climate crisis, with implications for peace, development and security. Climate change is set to challenge all systems on which global security, peace, and stability depend. How can the defence and security sector be part of the solution and contribute to reducing security risks related to climate change? How can organizations like NATO contribute to international climate efforts? What role does youth play in bringing this issue to the attention of policymakers?
